Tricks for Shelving Decor

Blog by Carolyn Cowe | February 5th, 2023

Trying to achieve a stylish and cozy home that lives up to the standards of Joanna Gaines is a tall task. You might have all the necessary pieces in a room, but it may still feel incomplete. This comes down to some small details you may be overlooking, not the bigger items in your room. One small detail task you can take on is reorganizing your bookshelf!

1. Have a variety of items

I recommend either having a completely full bookshelf or having a good amount of variety on your shelves. You should include variety in shape, color and size. Think about adding plants with long vines, larger family pictures, baskets, art or other knick knacks.

2. Work diagonally

It is visually appealing to have lines that you can follow. By working diagonally you will not only achieve this but it’s also a good rule to work in variety in a natural looking way. You can see this in the example below through the towels! If you like the look below you can shop them below.

3. Don’t get too crowded

I really enjoy the packed bookshelf look, but only if books are the only thing you have on display. If you want to incorporate other objects you need to allow everything to have room to breathe.

4. Turn books on their side

Turning books on there side will help with variety and white space. You can follow the diagonal rule to make this seem natural and not forced. This is also a good way to break up a crowded bookshelf even if you are not adding on other objects.

5. Color Code

If you really like color or think your room needs a bit of a pop, try color coding your books or your other items. It is a great way to make a display out of things you already own like a piece of art.

6. Asymmetric

Don‘t try to be too symmetric with your display. It can seem cold and unnatural.

7. Turn your books around

Now this may seem really odd to you... But this is a two fold idea. It looks great and you can pick books blindly to make a fun way to choose which book you will read!
